GinCork's 2007 New Year's Challenge REMINDER

Just one last reminder to all that GinCork is having its "Ring in 2007," where I invite you to call on or around midnight tonight to send your well wishes, songs of merriment, lists of new year's resolutions, or general expressions of self through the art of telecommunication. Intoxication is not required.

1-832-GIN-CORK
is the number.

I hope to hear from everyone in some form or another. Even if not, I wish you all a happy new year!

What Is Recoil endorses: Gutenberg! The Musical!

In December 2003 (was it December? Maybe February '04) I was fortunate enough to see "Gutenberg! The Musical!" in its original, 45-minute, one-act version at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater here in New York. It was damn funny. And while I'm probably not as well versed in the goings-ons of the UCBT it seems like it could very well be the best thing they've ever produced (minus the exploits of the original cast). The intricacies of the production (which is presented as a backers audition by Gutenberg! co-creators "Bud and Doug") are so spot-on in music, script and performace its kind of amazing I saw it in what is essentially a basement for $7.

Three years later the show is now a 90-minute, two-act, Off-Broadway play. Erin and I went last night and by-god if it isn't even better than I remember. Look, I have no credibility when it comes to critiquing theater, but a show that features two men playing dozens of characters while switching between scores of mesh baseball caps to signify who's talking seems way more complex than, say, just dancing and singing while wearing a cat costume.

It's also funny. Did I mention that? It's very very funny. Imagine the funniest thing you've ever seen. Now imagine something that isn't quite as funny. "Gutenberg! The Musical!" falls somewhere between those two things.

The show is playing through New Year's Eve here in NYC. If you're around, its well worth the admission fee.

Ugh, another plug: The 2007 GinCork New Year’s Challenge!

I'm a little lazy when it comes to retyping things, so here's a copy & paste of what's already on the GinCork website:

What better way to ring in the new year than to ring up GinCork while buzzed on the happy sauce?

This challenge isn’t about new year’s resolutions to become a better person, because, quite frankly, who’s kidding who? It’s about celebrating life and the joy that comes with the sweet nectar of alcohol and all happiness that ensues (whether short-term or long).

More specifically, I’m asking EVERYONE READING THIS to have your phones ready on New Year’s Eve (the night of December 31st, in case you’re just joining us) and call in with whatever it is you’d like to say at or around the stroke of midnight. I understand that once the countdown begins and the excitement kicks into high gear, it’s kind of a tall request to have you stick to this mission, but like I said, anytime around midnight would work just fine, whether before or after.

Not only do I challenge everyone reading this to do so, but I also pass the challenge to your friends, and their friends, and their bosses and half-removed cousins and pets and landlords and teachers and everyone else that falls in between. Yes, tell all!!! Make this challenge known to everyone you know and post it on your MySpace, Facebook, crappy Geocities page, Blogger, Live Journal, Xanga, etc., etc., etc., to make sure this thing goes global!

So all you long-time listeners who have been too timid to give us a dial, here’s your excuse to finally make the jump. I don’t know what it is that’s been holding you back, but it’s time to trade in your cherry for “long-time listener, first-time caller” status! All you do is dial 1-832-GIN-CORK, wait for the beep, and speak your piece. Then I’ll take it from there, posting the soundclip of the message on the GinCork website. Most of you already know how that goes. It’s so ridiculously easy, I can’t even express!

My goal is to be swamped with so many calls, it’ll take me a month to catch up! Please help me make this happen, as I’m apparently a glutton for punishment.

Quick recap: New Year’s Eve night (on or around midnight), call GinCork at 1-832-GIN-CORK and say whatever it is you have to say– preferrably after drinking a few too many for maximum entertainment’s sake (but that’s not at all required, though, as I don’t want to be responsible for an unneeded overabundance of drunkards). Doesn’t matter what you say, as long as you just make your voice heard. Then check back at the website in the following days to see/hear your entry. Should be fun.

Thanks everyone! Tell your friends! And remember to practice responsibility with all this!!!
